The JSA Charity Spotlight: Cristo Rey NY High School’s Magic in May

The JSA Blog, this week featuring: The Cristo Rey New York High School. Cristo Rey NY High School will hold its annual Magic of Cristo Rey on May 24th, 2022 at Tavern on the Green – but this year, there is a twist. At the annual event, professionals from around the tri-state area are invited to come, meet a few students, and hear about the school’s mission – usually from the senior class speaker. The idea is that old and new donors alike can see the MAGIC of a Cristo Rey education. This year, the magic is growing!

Cristo Rey will be honoring the entire class of 2022 who will be present at the event to announce their final college decisions. All 96 soon-to-be graduates have been accepted to a 4-year program and Cristo Rey New York students are five times more likely than similarly situated peers to graduate from college. Johnathan, a senior who will be attending Williams College on a full scholarship this Fall, writes “People who grow up on my block in the South Bronx are only expected to do two things: finish high school and get a job. So how did I end up here? BECAUSE OF CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL.”

Cristo Rey’s extraordinary mission is to provide a Catholic, co-ed college preparatory experience to students who do not have the educational background nor financial means to attend another school. They focus on cura personalis, care for the whole person, and not only provide an encouraging environment but a rigorous academic program. Cristo Rey has never raised their tuition of $2,000, but it costs nearly $18,000 a year to educate each student. What sets Cristo Rey apart is their Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). In a normal year, each student works 1 day a week for a corporate partner. The company pays about 40% of the cost of their education, and the student gains invaluable career experience that puts them above their peers when they graduate college. Tuition and CWSP provide about half of the cost to educate each student, but a gap remains.

This is where events like Magic of Cristo Rey have their biggest impact. This event will help cover the cost of educating all their students in the coming year. Come witness what makes the Cristo Rey NY students so special, celebrate their success, and believe in the Magic of Cristo Rey! To join them on May 24th, visit their EVENT WEBSITE – please RSVP by May 17th or make a donation HERE in honor of a senior or recent alum who attended your alma mater.
