This week on The JSA Blog, we’re sharing some news based on what we are seeing in the current marketplace.
Although social media has enabled us to instantly communicate on a broad range of issues like never before, there has been a negative byproduct that has been trending in the world and specifically in businesses as of late. Discussions have been polarized, as listening to differing opinions has taken a backseat over the need to be right and drown out others who may disagree. More and more, reason and compromise are fading and as a result, creativity and innovation are being stifled in the business world.
Courageous conversations are uncomfortable by nature, but they are essential to driving change and getting a diverse range of ideas into the minds of business leaders. Solving problems and finding the best way to success is often quite complicated. There isn’t always an easy straight path or obvious road map to follow. Tough conversations, involving sides with differing opinions are necessary in order to get all options on the table so a team can work through everything and find the best way forward.
People need to remember that they shouldn’t take things personal when colleagues disagree, or someone else’s idea is preferred by management over their own. It’s all part of the process and tough conversations are productive when everyone is respectful of one another. After all, the success of the team as a whole should be everyone’s shared goal. In the end, it doesn’t really matter who is “right” and who is “wrong.” It’s just about moving in the direction of success, together.
