The JSA Charity Spotlight: April 5th

The JSA Blog, this week featuring: New York Cares. One of the many worthy charities doing amazing and inspiring work in the local community. April is Global Volunteer Month and being a New York Cares volunteer means not only giving back to the community, but in a way that creates equitable impact. The organization meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

Every day, New York Cares sees firsthand the power that a coalition of passionate volunteers can have on inequities across the country, especially here in New York City. From becoming a team leader to getting your workplace involved, there are so many ways to make the most of your time, talent and treasure. Here’s a look at some of the accomplishments the New York Cares community of volunteers and supporters has made possible over the last year.

Tackled hunger

Thanks to the hard work of volunteers, New York Cares not only provided more than 63,000 coats, but nearly 33 million meals to communities all through out New York.

Built libraries

The Communities First partner, PS 55X in the South Bronx received a brand new jungle-themed library built from scratch.

Distributed books

New partnerships emerged with United for Brownsville, like the Brooklyn Book Bodega. A series of three book fairs provided thousands of free books to the community.

Prepared kids for school

Volunteers packed 15,000 backpacks to send kids back to school across the city and continued to help New York Cares support them with coats, meals and tutoring.

Sent flowers

New York Cares teamed up with Bloom Again Brooklyn to deliver flower bouquets to senior citizens and nursing homes.
